CHINA LAKE, California – Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake (NAWSCL) Fleet and Family Services Center (FFSC) increased their staff to support Sailors and families in wake of recent earthquakes.
The FFSC is staffed and ready to assist Sailors and their families with mental health counselling, Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) financial assistance, and Naval Family Accountability and Assistance System (NFAAS) processes for those in need.
Four additional family counselors have been brought in to assist with services in the wake of the recent earthquakes to assist service members and their families with overcoming the grief and trauma associated with dramatic life experiences.
“I’ve had a lot of parents bring their kids in and they wanted to tell their stories,” said Melissa Price, Director of Fleet and Family and part-time counselor. “I’ve had to try to normalize it to kids and explain that it’s okay to be scared. Counseling is important especially after things like this. People sometimes shut off their emotions instead of putting in the time to process through big experiences.”
The FFSC is ready and expecting to provide family counseling as well as counseling for children for as long as there is a demand. The FFSC is open is open Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and can be reached at 760-939-4545.
NMCRS services are also available to support families with any unexpected monetary needs. The organization is prepared to assist with basic living expenses and all the other emergency expenses that may arise. Active duty Navy and Marines, retirees and reservists who are currently on active duty are eligible for the no interest loans. The organization is also sending personnel from the San Diego area to assist Monday, July 15.
“We’re working long and hard with the command to make sure that the service members and their families get everything they can to recover from [these events],” said Linda Bego, Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society case worker.
The organization is also sending personnel from the San Diego area to assist Monday, July 15. NMCRS is located within the FFCS and is also open Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and can be reached at 760-939-2921.
