People from all over Poland traveled to Powidz this weekend to celebrate the annual Powidz Days event July 13, 2019. Powidz Days is a three day event where many local artists and entrepreneurs can come together to display and sell their work.

All over the event, the local citizens had set up booths to sell and display their items. The booths offered various crafts and artworks, which represent the culture of Poland. The items ranged from beautifully hand crafted wooden trinkets all the way to delicious homemade cheese, so anyone visiting the event could find a little bit of everything.

This year, United States Army Soldiers with the 286th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion out of Bangor, Maine wanted to show their support for the Polish people by participating. The 286th CSSB setup a static display consisted of military vehicles and equipment for the public to view and they were able to climb in and explore the High Mobility Multi-Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWV).

Surrounded by a mass of eager Polish children and adults, the vehicles were one of the most popular attractions second only to the food stands. The line wrapped around the nearby pottery table as Powidz Days visitors waited to get a turn to spin around in the gunner seat. The Soldiers also answered any questions the people had regarding the equipment on display.

“By having the U.S. present here today it allows the people to get accustom to their presence,” said Powidz Mayor, Jakub Gwit. “There are many obstacles we must overcome, but [having the U.S. here] opens up many possibilities to develop this region.”

Participating in events such as this not only allow Soldiers to help strengthen community relations, but it also provides The United States, our partner nations and our allied nations a better tomorrow.

“I think an event like this is the best way to strengthen the bond between America and Poland,” said Capt. Ethan Evans. “I think integrating ourselves with the community and not just the military, is the best way to show our support.”
