MANAMA, Bahrain - Capt. Gregory Smith relieved Capt. Darren Guenther as the Naval Support Activity (NSA) Bahrain commanding officer (CO) during a ceremony on base July 10.
The event was attended by Rear Adm. Yancy Lindsey, commander, Navy Region Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia and moderated by NSA Bahrain's executive officer, Cmdr. Walter Manuel.
During Guenther's farewell speech, he expressed gratitude for his time as commanding officer and highlighted the incredible adventure of being in Bahrain.
“I am very thankful for the relationships that have been built over the past several years, as well as those that will continue to be strengthened in the future… it’s the people, community, and family that we have found here on this incredible adventure. Our service members and civilians on base are a huge part of that. We have so many hard-working military commands and so many different departments. Their commitment to meeting the mission every single day is something amazing,” said Guenther.
He expressed his appreciation for being stationed in Bahrain and also extended a warm welcome to Smith.
“And finally, the fact that our home is here in Bahrain, is a key piece that makes our time here special. The connections with our local community make this not just a stop in the career, a stationing, but a real second home… to Capt. Greg Smith, I welcome you and your family, who will be joining you soon in Bahrain. I met Captain Smith several years ago. He’s an incredible guy, and I know you will all be thrilled with him as your next CO. This community, this family, will no doubt embrace you as their own,” added Guenther.
During Smith’s speech, he highlighted the importance of NSA Bahrain to the Navy as a whole.
“What we, the Sailors and civilians of NSA Bahrain, do here on this base is vitally important to the Navy, to our Nation, to the Region and to the world. It is an awesome responsibility, and we will do our job with integrity,” said Smith. “I am incredibly proud to serve each and all of you as commanding officer of Naval Support Activity Bahrain. And I want to say thank you one more time for what you do here every day. Shukran jazilaan.”
