MAYPORT, FL (NNS) -- Commander, Navy Regional Maintenance Center (CNRMC) and Naval Sea Systems (NAVSEA) Deputy Commander, Ship Maintenance and Modernization (SEA 21) Rear Adm. Tom Anderson, visited Southeast Regional Maintenance Center (SERMC) in Mayport, Fla. July 9-10.
Since assuming command of CNRMC on May 31, Anderson has made it a priority to meet with as many RMC Sailors and Civilians within his first 90 days. Anderson met with executive leadership to discuss his guiding principles, conducted a Navy Afloat Maintenance Training Strategy (NAMTS) certificate presentation and engaged with Sailors and Civilians from each shop and department during a tour of the facility. The visit also included “Coffee with the Chief’s Mess” where he shared his guiding principles and had a question and answer session, and concluded with tours of local contractor facilities.
During the presentation of the NAMTS certificates, Anderson stressed the importance of the program. NAMTS is a NAVSEA initiative designed to improve maintenance capability and self-sufficiency at sea through on-the-job training while earning Naval Enlisted Classifications (NEC’s) on shore duty. Most Sailors at SERMC will return to sea and become a force multiplier by training other Sailors to sustain their systems and equipment while on deployment or engaged in combat.
“At some point, you’re going to go back to sea and you will apply the expertise you’ve acquired here,” Anderson told Sailors who recently earned NAMTS NECs. “You need to be a forceful advocate for what you’ve learned. When something breaks at sea and you feel you’ve got the capability to fix it, you should pipe up and say ‘I got it!’” Anderson said.
“A couple of things will happen when you do that,” Anderson continued. “First, the rest of the crew will start to gain confidence in their ability to fix their equipment at sea; second, people who don’t know about the NAMTS program will become educated about it; and third, you become more proficient as a unit so when something does go wrong you are able to fix it quickly and properly.”
“Right now there is almost no place to get that type of experience except at a Regional Maintenance Center. That’s why your time here is important to the Navy and it benefits you, personally,” Anderson concluded.
CNRMC is a NAVSEA field activity and oversees the operations of Regional Maintenance Centers in their execution of surface ship maintenance and modernization. SEA 21 is the dedicated life cycle management organization for the Navy's in-service surface ships and is responsible for managing critical modernization, maintenance, training and inactivation programs.
