Future Sailors Curtis Shipley, and Joseph Shubbuck took the oath of enlistment into the United States Navy at the Pittsburgh Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS), July 25.

Shipley, an 18-year-old Clarion Area High School graduate, enlisted under the Engineman rating and Shubbuck, a 17-year-old Beaver Falls High School graduate, enlisted under the Cryptologic Technicians (Technical) rating.

“My aunt and uncle served in the Navy for 22 years,” said Shipley. “I wanted to do something with my life and this was the branch I leaned towards. My goal is to make something of myself and hopefully become an officer someday.”

Shipley spoke about his experiences in the Delayed Entry Program (DEP), culminating in him raising his right hand to swear in during his enlistment at MEPS.

“It’s been a long 10 months since I’ve been in (DEP) and I’ve been looking forward to this,” said Shipley. “My mom was very proud of me. She said through it all, what surprised her most is that I haven’t wavered or expressed disinterest in the Navy. Watching her cry and say how proud she was of me, brought up mixed emotions, but mainly I was proud of myself knowing I am going to do something with my life.”

Shipley wasn’t the only one joining the Navy with his family’s full support, as his fellow enlistee, Shubbuck shares in this experience.

What Shubbuck looks forward to the most is being able to meet new people, travel the world, and carry on his family’s tradition of military service.

“My Dad was in the Navy and my brother is currently serving in the Army.” Said Shubbuck. “My Dad is all for it, he’s really proud. My brother is proud too. They are both happy with my decision.”

For Shubbuck, like many young men and women his age, joining the Navy has a clear purpose in relation to his future plans.

“I plan to go to college after my five years and college will be paid for,” said Shubbuck. “I want to go to Penn State or Indiana University of Pennsylvania to study criminology and then join the police force afterwards.”

Yeoman 1st Class Antonio Diggs, Delayed Entry Program Coordinator assigned to Navy Talent Acquisition (NTAG) Pittsburgh enjoys working at a command that has an integral role in recruiting and shaping the Navy’s newest personnel.

“You see the future of the Navy with every enlistment,” Diggs said. "You see the people who are going to be here once you’re retired. You want to see quality and a sense of purpose in the individuals who want to join. Some of the recruiters here keep up with the Sailors they help enlist. It will be interesting to see how these Sailors’ careers will progress over the coming years.”

Established August 1, 2018, NTAG Pittsburgh is one of eight Navy Talent Acquisition Groups within Navy Recruiting Command. NTAG Pittsburgh controls recruiting throughout parts of western Penn., N.Y., W.Va., and M.d. Their goal is to attract the highest quality candidates to assure the ongoing success of America’s Navy.
