Former War Eagle Ombudsman Awarded 2019 Ombudsman of the Year
Story by Lt.j.g. Tim Devlin
Mrs. Chanel Jack, the Patrol Squadron (VP) 16 Ombudsman from May 2016 to September 2018, was awarded the 2019 Dorothy Flatley Award by the Association of Naval Aviation (ANA).
The Dorothy Flatley Award is given annually to a naval aviation spouse for extraordinary inspirational support to Navy families for fostering excellent morale among squadron personnel and their dependents, especially during deployments.
Mrs. Jack, spouse of VP-16’s former assistant maintenance officer, Lt. Cmdr. Kevin Jack, served as the command Ombudsman, providing support for the families during the squadron’s deployment to Sigonella, Italy and the various detachments and exercises that VP-16 participated in during that time. She was a fundamental member of the VP-16 support system, going above and beyond in her duties as an ombudsman for War Eagle families. She made it a priority to ensure that all families were provided all available resources, both during the squadron home cycle and especially while the squadron was deployed. Her years of experience as an Ombudsman have resulted in her becoming an expert on military processes and benefits, allowing her to be an advocate for families to understand military life and policy.
“Chanel Jack is that special kind of person, which is becoming all too rare in today’s society, who gives without concern for reward to make her community better when she is around,” said Cmdr. Michael P. Bukolt, Jr., Commanding Officer, Patrol Squadron Sixteen, “The War Eagles are exceptionally lucky to have benefitted from her influence.”
The Dorothy Flatley Award was presented to Mrs. Jack on 24 July 2019 by Capt. Craig Mattingly, Commander, Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing Eleven, and Skipper Bukolt during the command’s awards quarters.
