ANNISTON ARMY DEPOT, Ala. -- Col. Marvin Walker assumed command of Anniston Army Depot July 25 in a ceremony held in the installation’s Nichols Industrial Complex.
Maj. Gen. Daniel G. Mitchell, commanding general of the Tank-automotive and Amaments Command, ANAD’s parent command, presided over the ceremony.
Mitchell thanked the depot workforce for all they do in support of the war fighters during the ceremony.
“You are an extraordinary group of professionals,” he said. “Our war fighters succeed, in part, because of you.”
Mitchell shared the depot’s record in safety as well as the number of combat vehicles, small arms, artillery and other products ANAD refurbished for the U.S. military and its allies during Col. Joel Warhurst’s time in command.
Warhurst, who took command July 27, 2017, is retiring from the Army.
He thanked the workforce for their support to him and the Army throughout the last two years.
“My heart is full and I’m happy to have served with America’s finest,” Warhurst said. “This has truly been a great journey.”
Speaking directly to his successor, Warhurst told Walker the depot would serve him well.
“Marvin, you’re not only in good hands; you are in the best hands,” said Warhurst.
Walker, a Mobile, Ala., native, comes to the installation after serving overseas as the strategic plans chief for the 1st Theater Sustainment Command.
“TACOM always gets the cream of the crop, the best of the best,” said Mitchell of Walker, adding the new commander has a wealth of experience.
Walker’s career has taken him from Alabama to Korea, Fort Benning, the National Training Center, Kuwait, Iraq, Afghanistan and Washington, D.C., among other assignments.
“As you take command of this remarkable team, I am confident you will move this depot successfully forward and will handily deal with the new challenges and obstacles, as they arise,” Mitchell told Walker.
Walker told the crowd of community supporters, family members and depot employees how excited he was to be back in his home state.
“It seems like I’ve been trying to get back to Alabama my whole career,” said Walker. “I can’t tell you how honored I am to be here and have the opportunity to serve with you.”
Both men took a moment in their remarks to thank their families for being with them throughout a career of location changes and deployments.
Walker said his top priority for the depot will be to ensure the installation continues to provide exceptional support to the Soldiers.
“We’re going to keep sustaining the nation’s war fighters and tackling readiness,” he said. “The depot plays a prominent role in support to the war fighter.”
