Soldiers from the 420th Engineer Brigade out of Bryan, Texas, are cleaning and packing up July 24, 2019, following the completion of their mission annual training in Ft. Hood, Texas.

“We are taking down the bridge and equipment from our exercise,” said Spc. Daniel Ponce, a Technical Engineer Specialist with the 420th. He continued to explain the scenario of the training mission. “We were on Operation Hood Strike in Estonia [a country in Northern Europe], and we had already pushed the enemy forward and we reached a terrain hazard, so we had to set up bridges to get to the other side to keep pushing the enemy back.”

Over the course of two weeks, the Soldiers built two bridges – one measuring 100 meters, and the second measuring almost 500 meters. Building a bridge takes a lot of coordination, said Ponce, whose unit was in charge of surveying the area to ensure there would be enough room for the operation, and making sure that the vehicles carrying the equipment would be able to access the site via the local roads.

Each unit involved in building the bridges has their own bridge pieces that must come together. Now that the exercise is over, those pieces must be broken down and stored safely for future use, explained Ponce.

Joining the engineers is a group of human resource specialists, the 864th Theater Group Personnel Accountability Team (TGPAT) out of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania.

Spc. Donyiell Brown from the 864th, who is slated to attend Human Resource Specialist school, said that he and the other three Soldiers from his unit here were responsible for keeping track of accountability and updating rosters. Today, they are all hands on deck, helping to pack up the gear required to complete the mission over the last two weeks.

“Team work makes the dream work,” said Brown. “We are all Soldiers here. Whatever I can do to help clean up ultimately helps everyone and the mission overall.”
