"Our job is to fight and win the nation's wars,” said Gen. Mark A. Welsh III, the former United States Air Force Chief of Staff. “It's not an easy task, which is why Comprehensive Airman Fitness is so important. Our focus is on the well-being and care for ourselves, each other and our families so we can be more resilient to the many challenges military service brings."

Comprehensive Airman Fitness is an Air Force initiative based on improving Airman readiness and ability to accomplish the mission. The Air Force teaches its members to use the four pillars of Comprehensive Airman Fitness: mental, physical, social and spiritual, to help build and sustain a resilient workplace and community.

Airmen and their families are impacted by a lot of different situations throughout their lives and must use the tools and resources provided by their training to help cope with the daily challenges both at work and at home.

“Many members see the ‘four pillars’ as just another Air Force slogan, but there is so much to be learned from it,” said Staff Sgt. Steven Naughton, an Operations Intelligence Analyst from the 179th Airlift Wing, Mansfield, Ohio.

Naughton said he made the decision before he was even a teenager that he was going to be in the military.

Outside of working for the military full time, he maintains a demanding physical fitness routine and manages a fitness center in Wooster, Ohio.

“The one thing that motivated me to be physically fit is understanding that I would give up the right to not to be physically fit when I raised my right hand and joined the military,” said Naughton. “At any time of the day, my fellow Airmen may need me to perform a lifesaving action and I want to ensure that I am ready, able, and willing to do this confidently without hesitation.”

The facility he manages is unique because it offers specialized training.

“As a Certified Personal Trainer and with my background in the military and federal law enforcement, I holistically train members of the emergency services community to be mentally, physically, socially, and spiritually ready for duty,” said Naughton. “It is rewarding to me knowing that I help train those who could one day save my life.”

For Naughton, the gym is the one place he feels he is in complete control. It’s his own way of maintaining comprehensive fitness.

The four pillars truly represent a table. When one leg becomes unstable, the whole table suffers.

“My mental leg is certainly my strongest, for I know without the mind, I would not be physically, socially, or spiritually healthy. Each compliment the other, truly making life a wonderful and enjoyable adventure.”
