VAZIANI TRAINING AREA, Georgia -- U.S. Army Soldiers from the 2d Cavalry Regiment gathered across multiple ranges for live-fire and artillery exercises on the Vaziani Training Area, near Tbilisi, Georgia during Agile Spirit 19, July 30, 2019.

U.S. Army Europe and the Georgian Defense Forces provided the bulk of the forces participating in AgS19. Out of the approximately 3,350 military personnel, USAREUR and GDF each provided roughly 1,500 military personnel.

Soldiers from 2CR prepared for the day by moving Strykers into a static position on the range to fire Mark 19 Grenade Launchers from on top of their vehicles. Soldiers also prepared targets with materials provided by the Georgian Defense Forces.

Soldiers began to line up behind the firing line for multiple range qualifications. The sound of gunfire combustion coming from M4 Carbine Rifles, M320 Grenade Launchers, M240 Machine Guns, AT4s, and Mark 19 Grenade Launchers was about to begin.

“Every platoon is allowed to designate Soldiers for each range-training exercise, however the M4 qualifications takes precedence,” said Staff Sgt. William Cosgrove, a squad leader for 2nd platoon part, of 2d Cavalry Regiment. “There are four platoons from 2CR present, and from each platoon, [some] Soldiers will qualify with the M320 and [some] from each [platoon] will be sent to qualify with the AT4.”

Once Soldiers were qualified, the stress shooting exercises began. In the full heat of the day, Soldiers had to run 100 meters wearing their complete combat gear and kit to the firing point before beginning a team live-fire exercise.

“It’s a way for our guys to get familiar with conducting movement under fire and train as a team,” Cosgrove said.

Agile Spirit 2019 is a joint, multinational exercise co-led by the Georgian Defense Forces and U.S. Army Europe. Occurring July 27 through August 9, 2019, the brigade-level exercise incorporates a command post exercise, field training exercise, and live-fires. AgS19 enhances U.S., Georgian, allied and partner forces' lethality, interoperability and readiness in a realistic training environment.
