In the midst of a fatal incident, an observer might normally weigh their options before jumping to assist. For Lance Cpl. Angel A. Paneca, the decision to help a stranger in need was an easy one.
On July 7, 2019, Paneca, a travel clerk with Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island’s Finance Section, witnessed a fatal car crash involving two vehicles. The occupants in the vehicle that was hit died instantly, and the other vehicle caught on fire, trapping the driver. Without hesitation, Paneca ran to the nearest gas station to retrieve a fire extinguisher; after putting out the fire, Paneca remained with the entrapped driver until first responders arrived at the crash site and take the driver to immediate care.
In an awards ceremony on August 1st, Paneca was awarded a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal by Headquarters and Service Battalion Commander Col. Sean C. Kileen for his actions, initiative, and compassion towards a complete stranger whom could have perished alone.
