Soldiers, Airmen, and civilian employees of the Georgia Department of Defense crowded into the drill hall of the Clay National Guard Center August 2, 2019 to witness the promotion of Maj. Jason Lewis of Cartersville, Ga. to lieutenant colonel.
“Jason Lewis is kind of leader who exceeds expectations,” said Brig. Gen. Reginald Neal, commander of Joint Task Force North during his remarks. “Not only because of what he does but how he does it. He leaves units better than he found them and makes those around him better.”
Lewis was pinned with his new insignia of rank by his Mother Jeannie, wife Deserra daughter Ryean and son Kai. Neal administered the oath of office to Lewis and was the first to congratulate the Georgia Army National Guard’s newest lieutenant colonel.
Lewis graduated from the University of North Georgia in Dahlonega in 2004 and was commissioned a second lieutenant. His initial assignment was as a platoon leader in the Dalton-based Company C, 108th Armor Regiment. He deployed with his platoon to Iraq from 2005 to 2006. In 2007 he was appointed executive officer of the Cedartown-based Company D, 148th Brigade Support Battalion. He returned to Dalton March 1, 2008 as commander of Troop C, 1st Squadron 108th Cavalry Regiment. In 2009, Lewis embarked on his second combat deployment in command of Troop C, returning in May 2010. He subsequently served as officer strength manager for the Recruiting and Retention Battalion and executive officer of the 148h Brigade Special Troops Battalion before assuming the duties as personnel officer of the 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team in 2014. On April 1, 2018, Lewis assumed command of the 4th Civil Support Team, Weapons of Mass Destruction.
In his remarks, Lewis thanked God for the many leaders placed in his life’s path. Among those recognized were Master Sgt. Clinton Teague, who had been his platoon sergeant during his first overseas deployment and Brig. Gen. Neal who was his brigade commander at the Macon-based 48th IBCT. Lewis presented flowers to his wife and mother and thanked them for their support. Additionally, Lewis presented flowers to his daughter Ryean and a multi-tool to his son Kai.
“Thank you for showing me what setting the proper example is all about,” said Lewis.
In closing, Lewis recalled the advice Master Sgt. Teague imparted to him when he was a new platoon leader.
“In whatever position, whether you want to be there or not, always do your best and people will notice,” said Lewis recalling Teague’s words. “Always take care of your Soldiers. If you do those two things, you will never have to worry about anything in your career. It looks like I took your advice.”
