MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va.- U.S. Marine Corps families and law enforcement celebrated National Night Out at the Lincoln Military Housing Family Center on Marine Corps Base Quantico Aug. 6, 2019.

National Night Out is a nationwide event, which takes place on the first Tuesday of August each year. The event has been held for 36 years and in 16,0000 communities across the United States as a way to show support for law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve.

The Quantico Police Department and Provost Marshall’s Office, Quantico’s military police, put together their own National Night Out to celebrate the relationship between their community and first responders by educating local families and thanking the neighborhood for their part in keeping the area safe.

The event had food trucks, emergency service displays, a live DJ, and school supplies to be given away for the upcoming school year. Families got to experience law enforcement activities such as breaking down doors with a battering ram, looking through the emergency vehicles, and learning about equipment used by police.

Capt. Juan Diaz, operations officer with Security Battalion on base, stated the event gives insight into law enforcement aboard Quantico.

“People have a better understanding of what we do overall and that makes for a better community,” Diaz said. “My perspective, as a citizen of course, I would want to have community events with law enforcement,” said Diaz. “How can we trust a police force that we don’t have some level of rapport with?”

The battalion encompasses military and civilian law enforcement and the fire department, which are responsible for the protection of the lives, property and rights of all personnel and organizations aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico.

“Quite frankly, it’s a partnership with our community,” said Lt. Col. John Roach, commanding officer of the battalion. "This event really highlights the ability of our first responders whether that is our police, fire or EMS (Emergency Services), and their value and contributions to the community.

“This is just an opportunity to come together and have some community pride and some recognition of both of those partners.”

The event will continue to be held annually and Roach asks the community to mark their calendars for the first Tuesday in August each year.
