SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA – Vice Adm. Forrest Faison, Navy surgeon general and chief, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, participated in the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences Board of Regents that met Aug. 5-6.

An ex officio member of the board based upon his title as Navy Surgeon General, Faison met with fellow members to focus on major decisions, overall program executions and various accreditation statuses for the university, which is headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland.

“It is a privilege and an honor to serve on this board,” said Faison. “We are creating the future leaders of military medicine who will continue to honor the trust placed in us to provide the best quality care to our military members and their families.”

While in San Diego, the board toured Naval Medical Center San Diego and USNS Mercy (T-AH 19), one of the Navy’s two hospital ships.
At the meeting the board discussed a variety of academic and administrative topics including granting of degrees, faculty appointments and promotion, as well as student enrollment and overall university performance.

This year the university had the highest number of applicants to the Graduate Medical Education program ever with 527 applicants that resulted in the highest number of acceptances of offers to incoming students. The Medical School received nearly 3,100 applications for 170 openings for the class of 2023.

The board is a Federal Advisory Committee and comprises 15 members. Nine members are civilians with distinguished careers who are appointed by the Secretary of Defense with six individuals appointed ex officio based upon their position in the federal government.
