ROYAL AIR FORCE LAKENHEATH, England – The Liberty Wing hosted its annual Heritage Day here, Aug. 9, 2019.

Wing Heritage Day, organized by the 48th Fighter Wing Diversity and Inclusion committee is a celebration of the diverse cultures, heritages and backgrounds around the base, the U.S. Air Force and the Department of Defense.

“Diversity is a strong foundation to build relationships and teamwork,” said Staff Sgt. Maria Rodriguez, 48th Medical Group supervisor and president of the Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage club. “Knowing each other’s cultures will help you understand where people come from and what drives them.”

Various clubs and organizations from around the wing also showcased their heritage, culture, dances and cuisine from around the world which included: Lesbian Bisexual Gay Transgender and Queer, Asian American and Pacific Islander, African, Mexican and more.

“There are a lot of people at the wing with different cultures,” said Airman 1st Class Samantha Luna, 48th Force Support Squadron food service journeyman and event participant. “I think everyone enjoyed the opportunity to have some fun learning about other cultures and experiencing what each person brings to the table.”

To honor the commitment and tradition of celebrating diverse cultures and family at the Liberty Wing, the event was approved as an alternate duty location by Col. William L. Marshall, 48th Fighter Wing commander, so all Liberty Wing Airmen could have the opportunity to celebrate diversity and enjoy the festivities.

“There is no other country in the world so widely diverse, yet so deeply committed to being unified as the United States of America,” Marshall said. “Diversity is essential to our success as the world’s greatest Air Force.”
