ROSEMONT, Ill. – U.S. Army Reserve Maj. Rebecca Spohr, was honored during pre-game activities before the start of the National Pro Fast-pitch League softball game between the Chicago Bandits and the United States Specialty Sports Association Pride at Parkway Bank Sports Complex, August 11, 2019, in Rosemont, Illinois.
Spohr, who served as the company commander for the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 85th U.S. Army Reserve Support Command since February 2017, threw out a ceremonial first pitch to commence the game.
“It was a great honor representing the 85th (Army Reserve Support Command) for the first pitch today at the Bandits softball game, especially since there was a change of command yesterday, so it is my last weekend as the HHC commander,” said Spohr. “It was a lot of fun and I am proud to say it was the beginning and the end to my professional softball career.”
Spohr, is a veteran Soldier with 11 years of service. She deployed to Forward Operating Base Shank, Afghanistan, in 2009 as the Battalion S1 for Task Force Brawler, 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Spohr left active duty in 2014 and joined the U.S. Army Reserve.
Immediately following the first pitch, Spohr was introduced to the team while receiving a standing ovation from a cheering crowd of approximately 1,500 spectators; she additionally briefly met Swiper, the mascot of the Chicago Bandits softball team.
The Bandits beat the USSSA Pride with a final score of 6 to 5.
