FORT MCCOY, Wis. – Winners of the U.S. Army Reserve Best Warrior Competition rucked their way through the wilderness of Fort McCoy, Wisconsin, on Aug. 14, 2019, to become better prepared for their future competitions.
The three winners and three runners-up are now training to compete against the active duty and National Guard Soldiers in October.
Spc. Collin George, with the 102nd Military Police Company, said he has enjoyed training with his fellow competitors and that they have built friendships through the time spent together.
“You get close to anybody when you live with them and train with them every day.” said George. “Especially when you can relate and find that common ground.”
The common ground found between the Soldiers participating in this training is their competitive attitudes.
“We all volunteered to be here, so we all have that fire inside of us and that competitive nature that keeps us going,” said George, of the 200th Military Police Command.
Making it to all the training and competitions is a challenge, but George said his unit has been supportive through the process.
“I have only been to drill two times this year because I’m so busy, but every time I’m there they’re always asking me how I’m doing,” said George.
George’s unit knows the time he spends away from them now, will pay off for them in the future.
“We have spent all this time perfecting our skills,” said George. “Even if we don’t win, we have still made it this far and can help other Soldiers with anything they need.”
Staff Sgt. David Brown, with the 34th Field Artillery Battalion, 95th Division, prepares the Soldiers for competition while they are on Fort McCoy.
Brown understands that even though the competitors are fighting for one spot, they are all on the Army Reserve team.
“We’re all one team regardless of if we are competing against each other or not,” said Brown.
Brown makes sure that all the Soldiers under his training know they are all on the same team at the end of the day.
“All of us are coming together for one goal and that’s to win for the Army Reserve,” said Brown.
