SUBANG AIRBASE, Malaysia (NNS) –The “Fighting Tigers” of Patrol Squadron (VP) 8 participated in the Malaysian Subject Matter Expert Exchange (MY SMEE) from July 22-26, 2019. The exchange aimed at developing a common understanding of the maritime environment and how best to operate as an effective unified maritime force.
The VP-8 aircrew and maintenance personnel met with various Royal Malaysian Air Force subject matter experts from multiple air platforms including C-130, Beechcraft 200-T and CN235, to collaborate on Multinational Maritime Multi Mission Aircraft Capabilities. VP-8 was able to illustrate the new capabilities and mission sets the P-8A Poseidon has to offer.
The exchange also allowed for each participant to tour the aircraft with pilots and operators from three of the squadrons at Subang, as well as a luncheon with MEJ Mohd Kamil bin Mohd Noh Tudm, head of operations. In addition, VP-8 conducted two familiarization flights with Royal Malaysian Air Force aviators over two days providing an inflight perspective.
“It’s an eye-opening experience, working so closely with another nation’s military. Something I am truly grateful to experience so early in my career,” said Naval Aircrewman (Operator) 3rd Class Jay Thornton.
VP-8 is deployed to the U.S. 7th Fleet (C7F) area of operations conducting maritime patrol and reconnaissance operations in support of Commander, Task Force 72, C7F, and U.S. Indo-Pacific Command objectives throughout the Indo-Pacific region.
