Summertime fun was the name of the game during the Child Development Center’s (CDC) Summer Sizzle event held Aug. 1 at Fort McCoy.
Child and Youth Services (CYS) organized the event for CDC students and their parents to give them a chance to bond, relax, and have a good time. The event featured a variety of outdoor activities.
Children had a chance to cool off in the hot weather by running through sprinklers and eating watermelon or popsicles. Parents helped their kids with craft projects and created pictures with sidewalk paint.
One of the most popular activities was face painting. Superhero logos were a popular choice, as were cat whiskers.
Children also had a chance to learn about animals; WisCorps Critter Mobile brought several animals for children to see and touch, including a box turtle and a snake. And CYS’ parent organization, the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare, and Recreation brought an inflatable tank for children to climb in and slide down.
“The CDC features a lot of fun and educational activities for our students on a daily basis,” said Corissa Yahnke, CYS coordinator. “Summer Sizzle was an opportunity for parents to see what their children get to do during the day, as well as provide a few special events for the kids.”
Yahnke said openings are available in all CYS programs for the fall. Anyone interested in CYS programs can contact Parent Central Services for more information.
Another opportunity for families to relax and learn more about CYS programs will be at the annual Day for Kids event, which is Sept. 14. The Kids’ Obstacle Run starts at 9 a.m. at Rumpel Fitness Center, building 1122. Register early to get a free T-shirt. Registration is required by Sept. 11.
Activities will follow at the School Age/Youth Center, building 1792, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
There will be games, jousting, information booths, inflatables, door prizes, a DJ, and free popcorn and snow cones. A magic show will be held at 10:30 a.m., and lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
No registration is required for the activities at the School Age/Youth Center. Registration forms for the run are available at the School Age/Youth Center.
CYS services, including the CDC and the School Age/Youth Center for children and teens of school age, are available to active-duty military personnel, appropriated fund and nonappropriated fund Department of Defense (DOD) civilian employees, Reserve and National Guard personnel on active duty or during inactive-duty training, and DOD contractors.
All programs have limited availability based on staffing and funding. Parents may register for CYS services and find out more information about available programs by contacting Parent Central Services in building 1668 or by calling 608-388-8956.
