KABUL, Afghanistan — Afghan and coalition forces killed an armed militant and detained a suspect early this morning during operations designed to destabilize the Haqqani network in eastern Afghanistan.

In the Sora Khely Valley of Musa Kheyl District, Khowst province, approximately 25 kilometers northwest of Khost city, Afghan and coalition forces raided a compound to disrupt a network directly connected to the, April 16, attack of the Musa Kheyl District Center.

Arriving at the targeted compound, the assault force observed multiple individuals fleeing a building. As forces maneuvered toward the unidentified individuals, an armed militant located near the building engaged the force with an AK-47 assault rifle. Forces returned fire, killing the militant.

Afghan forces identified the building as a madrassa. Inside, forces found a chest rack and grenades, and detained one suspected militant without further incident.
