VICTORY BASE COMPLEX, Iraq — Mail Call would be nothing without the Joint Military Mail Terminal, the main Mail Terminal in Baghdad, Iraq, providing support to all of the Victory Base Complex, and numerous outlying forward operating bases, contingency operating bases, and patrol bases.
They receive, process, and distribute all incoming, and outgoing mail for the U.S. Military Forces, and Kellogg, Brown and Root personnel.
The JMMT is the most critical part of our Postal System here in Iraq. They receive on an average two to three flights per day. These flights contain an estimate of 100 tri-walls per plane. The JMMT is responsible for offloading the flight, inspecting all inbound and outbound parcels, processing and sorting all inbound and outbound parcels, distribution of all parcels to their corresponding units, palletizing all outgoing mail, and loading the outbound flights.
The 271st Human Resources Company, 10th Sustainment Brigade Troops Battalion, 10th Sustainment Brigade has assigned a portion of the 2/22nd HRC to oversee the operations of the JMMT. The Soldiers consist of Spc. Aisha Anthony, a technical inspector from Fort Lewis, Wash.; Sgt. Harlen Hayes, contracting officer representative and non-commissioned officer in charge from Fort Lewis, Wash.; 1st Lt. Jose Allende, officer in charge, from Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico.
Anthony is directly responsible for the inspections of 91 Unit Mail Rooms. She annotates any deficiencies and requires the UMRs to correct them. She also re-inspects the UMR in 30 days to give it a Go or a No-Go status. She also conducts our Unit Mail Clerks mail handler's class. She trains and certifies more than 120 Soldiers and civilian personnel within a month.
Sgt. Hayes is directly responsible for overseeing the KBR personnel, and Soldiers alike. On a daily basis, he processes the mail status reports, and TTISMs. He then forwards them to the 271st HRC for further processing. He is also responsible for conducting monthly audits of the KBR personnel.
Army Post Office SORT/JMMT is the most important aspect of a Soldier's morale. We provide the accessibility of packages and letters from family and friends back home. Without encouragement and care packages from family and friends, a Soldier and civilian's morale would be greatly diminished. Everyone supports the war efforts in their own way, but we support the Soldiers, and civilians who support us every day, in every way.
