Peterson Air Force Base, Colo. – The Colorado Springs Regional Command Post on Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, completed major renovations in May, 2019. The renovations enable CSRCP staff to operate more efficiently, improving their ability to respond to emergency situations and act as the eyes and ears for five wings across Peterson AFB, Schriever AFB and the U.S. Air Force Academy.
“It was a joint effort in our office, from the leadership all the way down to the controllers,” said Senior Master Sgt. Lenora Gallegos, superintendent of the CSRCP. “We got their feedback on what would make their jobs easier or more efficient. Then, we gathered all those ideas and presented them to our then-wing commander, Col. Todd Moore. We had his full support; he said ‘make it happen.’”
The CSRCP provides centralized, responsive command and control of forces, relays command direction, provides mission monitoring, conducts operational reporting, facilitates receipt and dissemination of orders, information and requests for the 21st Space Wing, 302nd Airlift Wing, 50th Space Wing, 310th Space Wing and 10th Air Base Wing, and responsible to Air Force Reserve Command and Air Force Space Command. They’re also responsible for pushing emergency notifications to the base and surrounding communities. It’s a unique setup — most command posts handle a single base with a single mission.
“People don’t know what we do,” said Gallegos. “They think we just announce weather alerts. But we’re so much more than that.”
In an emergency situation, such as an active shooter on base, the CSRCP is responsible for issuing a lockdown announcement using AtHoc and the giant voice. To improve efficiency, renovations required the removal of a wall that bisected the CSRCP into a linear seating situation and two rooms. Now, there’s one open room in which the senior controller sits behind the junior controllers on shift.
“It's more efficient that way, allowing us to communicate and see each other's consoles to maintain the operational picture,” said Tech Sgt. James Moss, noncommissioned officer in charge of command and control operations training.
The console interface was also renovated to better serve the needs of the people who use it day to day.
“The thing that we are tasked with the most is sending out weather notifications and going on the giant voice for each of the five installations,” said Moss. “So with the new layout, we put the weather warning system right in the middle, as opposed to all the way on the left side of the console.”
CSRCP also has total force integration with the 21st SW and 302nd AW, meaning active duty and reserve citizen Airmen receive equal training and sit side by side in the command post, doing the same mission. All of this allows the CSRCP to maintain the level of effectiveness required for its Airmen to succeed in their missions.
