PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- The 21st Medical Group, located at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for ambulatory health care and primary care medical home accreditations by demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards. The Gold Seal is a symbol of quality that reflects a health care organization’s commitment to providing safe and quality patient care.

The 21st MDG and all of its associated squadrons underwent a rigorous onsite review by the Joint Commission May 7-9, 2019. During the visit, a team of Joint Commission assessors evaluated compliance with clinical, administrative and ancillary elements of performance standards, including infection prevention and control, environment of care, national patient safety goals, emergency management, human resources, medication management, universal protocols and leadership. The accreditation period is effective May 10, 2019 and is customarily awarded for three years.

A civilian accreditation organization, The Joint Commission’s standards are developed in consultation with health care experts and providers, measurement experts and patients. They are informed by scientific literature and expert consensus to help health care organizations measure, assess and improve performance. The surveyors also conducted on-site observations and interviews.

According to Col. Chris Vaughn, 21st MDG commander, achieving this accreditation by The Joint Commission illustrates the patient-centered, safety-focused, high-quality health care delivered every day by the staff of the 21st MDG. “Accreditation by The Joint Commission reflects not just the delivery of health care, but delivery of health care according to a very high set of standards,” he said. “Every member of our staff takes great pride in supporting the medical and dental needs of our community. We are humbled by this significant accomplishment and the recognition awarded to the 21st Medical Group and appreciate the continued partnership with The Joint Commission.”
