Cedar Rapids, Iowa—Sailors from Navy Operational Support Center Rock Island will be providing full military honors at the burial of Signalman 3rd Class William Shanahan.

Shanahan followed in the footsteps of his father, a Navy veteran from the first World War, and enlisted in the Navy in 1940. He was serving aboard the USS Oklahoma at Pearl Harbor when Japanese aircraft attacked on Dec. 7, 1941. Shanahan was one of 429 members of the crew killed or missing. He was 23 years old.

On May 31, 2019, Shanahan's remains were identified using advanced technology analysis, nearly 80 years after the attack that thrust the United States into World War II.

Funeral services will be held Sept. 3, 2019 at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church, 120 5th Street NW, Cedar Rapids, IA 52405. Graveside services with full military honors immediately to follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery, 375 32nd Street Drive SE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52403.

Sailors will also be receiving the remains at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home on Aug. 30, 2019.

"William Shanahan served our country valiantly and made the ultimate sacrifice," said NOSC Rock Island Commanding Officer Brian Wilson. "The U.S. Navy is honored to finally welcome this Sailor home and provide the full military honors which he earned. Myself and my staff are humbled to be a part of it."

Media who wish to attend reception or services should RSVP to Lt. Charity Edgar, Public Affairs Officer at charity.edgar@navy.mil.
