The Navy Exchange Service Command (NEXCOM) announced its Bingham Award winners for fiscal year 2018. The Naval Station Great Lakes (NSGL) Navy Exchange (NEX) won for sales category 1, over $70 million. In the past decade, the Great Lakes NEX has won the award in their category three other times: in 2013, 2015 and 2017.
“It sounds like we’re building a dynasty,” said Capt. Ray Leung, NSGL commanding officer. “We’ll keep it going by continuing with your excellent service that you provide on a daily basis from the bottom of your heart.”
“It’s a team effort. I’m just so proud of everyone working together to deliver this benefit,” said Rear Adm. Robert J. Bianchi (Ret), CEO, Navy Exchange Service Command. “The team here doesn’t have an easy mission.”
“What sets you apart from the other stores in our NEXCOM enterprise is that you are consistently able to respond to the ever-changing needs of the Navy and this community while also being a home away from home, especially for these new Sailors,” said Bianchi.
“Navy Exchange Great Lakes has the best mission in the entire Navy Exchange Enterprise,” said Chris Ponchak, General Manager, Great Lakes NEX.
The Bingham Award is presented to the best-of-the-best Navy Exchanges in nine sales categories for overall financial results and customer service.
During the past year, the Great Lakes NEX supported Recruit Training Command with assistance to over 42,000 recruits. Over the course of the awarding period, NEX Great Lakes delivered 196,734 recruit haircuts, made 865,046 recruit uniform alterations, laundered 3 million pounds of clothing, and pressed 566,006 uniforms. They also outfitted over 300 Chief Petty Officer selectees.
The Recruit Family Welcome Center run by the Great Lakes NEX at Burkey Mall now provides a centralized location for more than 150,000 visitors attending recruit graduation ceremonies.
“I am very proud to have the Great Lakes Navy Exchange recognized for their excellence in customer service and operations with the awarding of the Bingham award,” said Leung.
NEXCOM established the Bingham Award Program in 1979 to recognize excellence in customer service, operations and management at NEX activities. The award is named after the late Capt. W.H. Bingham, Supply Corps, U.S. Navy Reserve. Bingham was the chief executive officer of the R.H. Macy's company, and was appointed by the Secretary of the Navy in 1946 to lead an advisory board for establishment of what is now NEXCOM.
