Indiana National Guard Staff Sgt. William Szabo, a 38th Infantry Division combat medic from Carmel, currently serves in the Middle East in support of Task Force Spartan, which maintains a U.S. military posture in the region to strengthen defense relationships and build partner capacity.
Szabo, a National Guard veteran of more than 10 years, joined the military out of a sense of patriotism and to help his peers.
"I wanted to serve my country and I became a medic so I could take care of soldiers -- that’s my job, and that’s what I like to do," said Szabo. "Taking someone who is either injured, sick or hurt and helping them get better. You see soldiers coming in every day -- whether they’ve twisted an ankle or have been really sick -- and you take care of them but then you get to see them around base, and they’re so appreciative of you helping them."
Szabo said he appreciates being a citizen-soldier, and he values his civilian and military careers.
“I’m able to not only serve my country, but also continue my civilian career working for (an orthopedic hospital)," he said. "So I’m taking care of patients there, and can still fulfill my duties of taking care of soldiers.”
