CHIÈVRES, Belgium -- European Heritage Days will be held Sept. 7 and 8 in the Wallonia region of Belgium. Each year, these days allow visitors to discover monuments and sites that are often inaccessible otherwise. More than 450 activities are organized through the region. Here are a few places people can visit in the local area:
Participate in the opening of the 31st edition in Seneffe
Before the weekend, an opening ceremony will be held Sept. 6 in the beautiful castle of Seneffe. From 9 p.m., visitors will see tightrope walkers, acrobats, jugglers, and more performers. A dance party will start at 11 p.m. The event will be held on Rue Lucien Plasman, 7. There is no entrance fee.
Enter in the Gallo-Roman Space in Ath
The Gallo-Roman Space was installed in 1997 in the old drawing academy in Ath. Visitors can go on a tour that will take them from the neoclassical facade of the academy to the different floors designed to exhibit the museum's collections. Visitors can also discover Gallo-Roman archaeological pieces. The Gallo-Roman Space is open Saturday and Sunday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Guided tours will be held both days starting at 3 p.m. The Gallo-Roman Space is located on Rue de Nazareth, 2. Discover the ramparts with a torchlight in Binche
Binche is the only Belgian town surrounded by fortifications dating back to the 12th century. Accompanied by a guide in a medieval costume, visitors will use torchlights and discover the new illuminations of the ramparts at night. Visit the tower of the Havré Castle
Visitors will have access to the tower and discover the castle’s history during a guided tour. The castle is open Sunday from 10 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The castle is located on Rue du Chateau, 30. Learn more about the Saint-Waudru Collegiate Church in Mons
The religious and cultural heritage of Mons is linked to its history, developing from the 7th century around the community founded by Saint Waudru. The Saint-Waudru Collegiate Church is one of the most magnificent Brabantine Gothic churches in Belgium. The church is open Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. There will be guided tours on Saturday at 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m., and Sunday at 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. The church is located on Rue du Chapitre, 3. Admire the Collegiate Church Saint-Vincent in Soignies
Soignies lived for nearly nine centuries at the hour of the Canons of Saint-Vincent who built an impressive Collegiate Church in the 11th century. With its primitive Romanesque style, its high walls in rubble stone and its two massive towers topped by spires give the building majesty and elegance. The church is open Saturday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. There will be guided tours on Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m., 3 p.m., and 4 p.m., and guided tours of the carillon on Sunday at 2 p.m., 2:30 p.m., 3 p.m., 3:30 p.m., and 4 p.m. A carillon concert will be held Sunday at 5 p.m. The church is located on Grand-Place, 1. Enter in the glass chapel in Braine-le-Comte
Built in 1930, the glass chapel was abandoned and vandalized before being restored. The chapel welcomes visitors for a remarkable visit. The glass chapel is open Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. There will be guided tours on Saturday and Sunday at 10 a.m. The chapel is located on Rue Arthur Brancart, 100.
