HOMESTEAD, FL – Fresh off of state active duty in support of Hurricane Dorian operations, soldiers assigned to the 50th Regional Support Group (RSG) welcomed their new commander during a change of command ceremony held outside the unit’s headquarter in South Florida. During the event, Col. Ricardo Roig took command of the 50th RSG from Col. Richard Elam.
Brig. Gen. John Haas, Florida National Guard Assistant Adjutant General Army, presided over the ceremony, which was also attended by Maj. Gen. Ralph Ribas, Director of Mobilization and Reserve Affairs for United States Southern Command, Brig. Gen. Paul Chauncey, Florida National Guard Assistant Adjutant General for Training Installations and Programs, as well as friends, family and leadership teams from battalions and companies from throughout the 50th RSG.
During his remarks, Haas praised Elam’s accomplishments. “As Spear Six, Colonel Elam leaves behind a legacy of superior leadership and unmatched performance,” Haas said. “Under his leadership, the 50th Regional Support Group has gained a well-earned reputation as a highly skilled, highly capable and highly motivated organization.” Haas also presented Elam with the Meritorious Service Medal in recognition of his service as 50th RSG commander.
After three years in command of the 50th RSG, Elam will return to Joint Forces Headquarters in St. Augustine, Florida to serve as the state’s chief logistics officer in the G-4 section. Elam thanked the soldiers of the 50th for their dedication and hard work, and highlighted some of their accomplishments during his tenure as commander. “While today is a day about change in leadership, it is also a time for reflection and celebration,” Elam said.
Roig thanked his predecessor for his leadership and outlined his vision and goals for the unit’s future. “At the end of the day, we are all here because of Colonel Elam’s successful command.” Roig said. “To all the 50th RSG soldiers, I have two promises: that I will lead and that I will train you.”
Roig is no stranger to the 50th RSG, having previously served as its deputy commander and most recently serving as the commander of the 930th Digital Liaison Detachment, a direct reporting unit to the 50th RSG. The 50th RSG is one of Florida’s Major Subordinate Commands, with a mission to provide logistical support and sustainment.
