Ten Oklahoma National Guard Soldiers enter the rank of officer after graduating Officer Candidate School (OCS) during a ceremony at the Oklahoma Army National Guard Regional Training Institute in Oklahoma City, Sept. 8.

The ceremony included the Oklahoma OCS Hall of Fame induction for Maj. Gen. Glen E. Moore before he was featured as the guest speaker for the graduation.

Moore served for nearly 40 years in various leadership roles, culminating as the Deputy Commanding General, United States Army National Guard, Headquarters, United States Army Training and Doctrine Command, Fort Eustis, Virginia.

“For me, being an officer candidate and going through OCS meant a lot to me,” said Moore. “I served as an enlisted Soldier prior to becoming an officer, and that served me well throughout my career.”

In addition to his military service, Moore joined the Tulsa Police Department and served as an officer for more than 30 years. He earned numerous Chief’s Unit Awards and letters of commendation throughout his civilian career.

“OCS taught me how to work hard and put up with things that you can’t necessarily control,” Moore said. “You just have to concentrate on the job that you’re in and doing the best job you can.”

As the recent OCS graduates of Class 64 and 64A step into their new leadership roles, the officers have leaders like Moore to inspire their future careers.

“The most valuable thing I’ve learned at OCS is humility,” said newly commissioned 2nd Lt. Michael Shelburne. “This program teaches you to think of others before yourself.”

Since the establishment of the Oklahoma National Guard OCS in 1956, more than 2,100 Soldiers have graduated from the program and commissioned into the Army National Guard.

The graduates of Class 64 and 64A include: Sara Branson, Daniel Chamberlain, Cody Edwards Johnson, Ryan Garrett, Michelle Jackson, Gregory Law, Trent Newman, Craig Nikkel, Rhett Ables, and Michael Shelburne.
