CAMP MURRAY, Wash. – Senior Master Sgt. Cory Welton, the Operations Superintendent with the 116th Air Support Operation Squadron, was named as the Washington Air National Guard Senior Noncommissioned Officer of the Year earlier this year.
Welton, who is a Tactical Air Control Party member, deployed as a detachment superintendent in Afghanistan in 2018. In Afghanistan, Welton was responsible for integrating airpower across a large region, personally overseeing more than 500 airpower missions, enabling 36 casualty evacuation missions, and protecting thousands of coalition service members.
While deployed, Welton also led men's health awareness for a group of 50 coalition members and organized a “Movember” event, raising $2,000 for charity and increasing morale.
“I want to thank the men and women of the 116th ASOS and the team I had the honor of deploying with to Afghanistan,” said Welton.
Welton, originally from Sedro Woolley, Washington, joined the Air Force as a means to pay for college. He quickly realized that he had found his calling and that he loved being a Tactical Air Control Party member. “One of the defining moments of my career was deploying to Iraq in 2005 and being able to put all of the training that I had received to the test. It was a humbling experience that I will never forget,” said Welton.
When asked about being selected for the Senior Non Commissioned Officer of the Year award, Welton replied, “This award means that my hard work and dedication to my craft has paid off.”
In his free time, Welton enjoys spending time outdoors, hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, woodworking, and working on his home.
