The 100th Air Refueling Wing hosted a Resiliency Tactical Pause Sept. 5 - 6, 2019, at RAF Mildenhall, England.

The two-day event, one of many resilience activities held across the Air Force at Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein and Chief Master Sgt. Kaleth O. Wright’s request, involved guest speakers, a presentation of base helping agencies, various small unit discussions, and the unveiling of Operation YOU, a program created by the Bloody Hundredth’s 5/6 Council.

As part of the all-call on the first day of the pause, Col. Troy Pananon, 100th ARW commander, emphasized the solution to the problem of suicide in the military would not be easy, but a long term struggle.

“This is a journey. Today we might take that first step. Today and tomorrow, we’re focused on resiliency,” said Pananon. “But it’s more than two days. It’s an everyday issue. So we’re going to visit and attack this each and every day.”

Airmen then had the opportunity to listen to the remarks of guest speakers Dave Roever, Vietnam veteran and Purple Heart recipient and John Arroyo, retired Army captain, Green Beret and Fort Hood shooting survivor, who reiterated the importance of getting back up after falling down and noticing the warning signs in one’s peers.

“See something, say something. Start by asking ‘are you okay?’” said Roever. “Ask the question, listen to the answer and step in and intervene in your fellow Airman’s life.”

The guest speakers were followed by the introduction of Operation YOU. Its components include embedded unit liaisons to encourage peers who are dealing with mental health concerns to reach out for help as well as the implementation of mental health days, or time off from work that individuals who are feeling stressed can use to take advantage of the resiliency resources available to them.

Before ending the all-call and ushering in the second day of the event, focused more on unit-specific discussions and team activities, Pananon reminded the crowd that the Air Force is a family that will help its members overcome the troubles they may face.

“You’re a part of the Air Force. You’re a part of a big family. We are going to put our arms around you,” said Pananon. “There is somebody here that can and will help you. Don’t forget that.”
