Marines and sailors with Headquarters and Support Battalion participated in a remembrance run at Camp Foster, Okinawa, Japan, September 11, 2019, honoring lives lost during the 9/11 attacks against America.
About 300 Marines and sailors from Alpha and Bravo Company each completed five and a half miles around the base perimeter to represent the eleventh day of September.
Nearly 3,000 Americans lost their lives as a result of the 9/11 attacks.
“It’s been 18 years since the attacks,” said 1st Sgt. Thomas W. Tabisz, the bravo company first sergeant with Headquarters and Support Battalion, Marine Corps Installations Pacific. “Being so far away from America, out here in Okinawa, Japan, I thought it was especially important to remember.”
During morning colors, the American flag was positioned at half-mast to signify a time of mourning for those who sacrificed and continue to sacrifice themselves for their country.
“It was a day that obviously changed my life forever and a day that I knew we were going to war,” said Capt. Jessica De Maria, bravo company commander with Headquarters and Support Battalion, Marine Corps Installations Pacific. “I remember watching the news, and seeing the twin towers go down, and I knew we were going to war.”
De Maria explained that during her childhood she saw firsthand the effects of 9/11 on close friends and family.
“Watching people deploy, and giving everything they have, the least I could do was give all I’ve got, so here I am today,” said De Maria.
By direction of the President, 9/11 observance day, or Patriot Day as a mark of respect to those who died on September 11, 2001.
