KINGS BAY, Ga. (September 11, 2019) – A 9/11 memorial ceremony was held at the World War II Submarine Veterans Memorial Pavilion on Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay.
The ceremony honored the heroic acts of the first responders, service members and civilians who lost their lives during the tragic events of 9/11 and was conducted by the Kings Bay Chief Petty Officers Association.
“What I have seen is it does not matter how you serve, but the traits of selflessness, sacrifice, humility, courage and honor are common,” said Rear Adm. Mike Bernacchi, Commander, Submarine Group Ten. “Police, fire, emergency management, paramedics, military and many others, all run to danger when others run away.”
Bernacchi, the event’s keynote speaker, talked about not only the sacrifice and commitment to duty of the first responders, but also the importance of the Navy in the defense of our way of life.
“The United States Navy proudly stands as the shield of the republic, and we will not let anyone jeopardize our way of life,” said Bernacchi. “The events of September 11th were meant to tear us apart, but instead we saw this nation come together, stronger than ever.”
At the conclusion of the ceremony all in attendance took the time to shake the hands of the honored guests, Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay and Camden County first responders.
“For the last 18 years we’ve participated in the ceremony and we’re glad to be a part of it,” said Lisa Boyett, operations chief of Camden Fire Rescue.
