Pittsburgh area Sailors gave a heartfelt thanks to veterans while volunteering during a three-hour cruise aboard the Gateway Clipper Fleet.
This marks the 28th year Sharing and Caring Inc. has hosted an annual boat ride, an event designed to better the lives of hospitalized veterans. Sailors from throughout the Pittsburgh area helped comprise this year’s all-volunteer staff, where they treated prior service members to lunch, dancing, contests, prizes, live entertainment, and a wreath laying ceremony-recognizing POW/MIA.
Giving back while sharing camaraderie was at the heart of their efforts.

“There’s nothing more rewarding as an active duty military service member than to serve American Veterans of foreign wars, especially those who are disabled,” said Boatswain’s Mate 1st Class Barn Henderson, assigned to Navy Talent Acquisition Group (NTAG) Pittsburgh.

Sailors volunteered during each of the four days cruises were scheduled for more than 1,600 veterans.

“It’s outstanding that we have NTAG recruiters, NROTC cadets, NOSC Active Duty staff and also Reserve Sailors working together to support this wonderful event and the community that we all share” said Lt. Sam Colton, executive officer of Navy Operational Support Center (NOSC) Pittsburgh.

For Sharing and Caring’s key leaders, showing veterans appreciation for all they have done is more than a one-time event; it is a way of life.

“When they are getting off the ship, they are so happy that they were able to get out for at least one day and enjoy life a little bit,” said Sharing and Caring president Bob Abbott.

“Every year gets better and better. We do it for the veterans to keep them happy. My wife and I have been volunteering for 60 years. I’m 90 years old, and I’m still doing it. My wife is 89, and she is still doing it. It’s a family affair.”

NTAG Pittsburgh, part of Navy Recruiting Command, recruits the next generation of Navy Sailors throughout areas in Pennsylvania, New York, West Virginia, and Maryland.

Navy Recruiting Command consists of a command headquarters, three Navy Recruiting Regions, 17 Navy Recruiting Districts and nine Navy Talent Acquisition Groups that serve more than 1,300 recruiting stations across the world. Their combined goal is to attract the highest quality candidates to assure the ongoing success of America’s Navy.
