LOS ANGELES – A little support can go a long way. Added to the mix are those who are willing to go beyond that and have a recipe for success. Janis Rodrigues, 311th Expeditionary Sustainment Command Family Readiness Group secretary, and Diana Neri, 311th ESC FRG treasurer, supported 311th ESC Soldiers during their battle assembly, where medical services were being provided, September 7.

The Family Readiness Group program is a command-sponsored organization of family members, volunteers, Soldiers and civilian employees associated with a particular unit. They are normally organized at company and battalion levels and fall under the responsibility of the unit's commanding officer.

“For me, helping is a small way to give back and to say, 'thank you for serving,' to the Soldiers and their families for the sacrifices they make for our country,” said Rodriguez. “Seeing Soldiers and their families enjoying themselves at our events is very rewarding.”

FRG's are established to provide activities and support to enhance the flow of information, increase the resiliency of unit Soldiers and their families. On this weekend, the FRG sold pizza, sodas and snacks to raise funds for Family Days, holiday events, which directly benefit the Soldiers and Families.

With ten members, the 311th ESC FRG consists of family members, community volunteers and civilian employees associated with the unit to help families of the Soldiers. They also check in on the families during deployment, providing resources and support.

“This work is very rewarding and I enjoy helping our Soldiers,” said Neri, who also works in the 311th ESC DEERS office. “We were here today and we will be here when the 311th deploys next year.”

The 311th ESC dates back to the post World War II period, during which the U.S. Army recognized that there was a large number of logistically qualified Army Reserve Soldiers in the Southern California area.

The 311th ESC’s primary mission is to command the sustainment brigades that provide combat support and combat service support in the areas of supply, maintenance, transportation, field services and the functional brigades or battalions.
