MOFFETT AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Calif.— Airmen of the 129th Rescue Wing, soldiers from the 63rd Readiness Division and NASA firefighters gathered for First Responders Day of Appreciation Luncheon on September 11, 2019 at Moffett Field Chapel, Moffett Field, CA.
The luncheon was organized by the 129th Rescue Wing’s chaplain office.
“It feels terrific to break bread with everyone working so hard to keep us all safe”, said Master Sgt. Brian D. Hendrickson, chaplain assistant. “They play such a critical role protecting our nation not only on 9-11 but each and every day so it’s fantastic that we get us all together and cook a meal for them, it’s an honor.”
This is the fourth year the chaplains have organized luncheon on this day to get everyone together.
“The primary reason for this event birth out of the day that we all remember and we came to the conclusion that we all need to honor all those who have fallen and all those who serve,” said Maj. David G. Schenone, chaplain. “We felt that it’s only appropriate that we acknowledged all those who put their lives on line for us every day.”
The event started with Col. Waldman, sharing his 9-11 experience while flying as a commercial airline pilot at the time.
“I took off that morning on a four day trip from Minneapolis to Denver,” said Col. Jeffrey H. Waldman, vice commander, 129th Rescue Wing. “I heard about the events unfolding from the air traffic control. I thought it was strange that a plane couldn’t miss a tower. But then, we got news that a second plane hit the towers and it was then I realized that this was an attack and we were being cautioned to land.”
The guest speaker, Rev. Scot R. Slater, who is in the process to become a chaplain with the 129th Rescue Wing, urged everyone to use this time to always remember.
“We should never forget what happened,” said Slater. “Not just to remember the ones we lost, but also to remember the heroes who charged into the buildings in service of their fellow men. Firefighters, police officers, paramedics and citizens who went into the chaos to serve. We remember them today.”
The event concluded with a blessing of the food and BBQ luncheon for everyone.
“We have being doing this for four years now and every year more people come to the event,” said Chaplain Schenone.
