US Army Soldiers from the 349th Combat Support Hospital Detachment of California participated in an inter-operability medic training workshop in coalition with the Army forces of Kuwait. Led by the United States Military Hospital - Kuwait, CAMP ARIFJAN, medics were joined by forces from the Kuwaiti Armed Forces Hospital, as well as the Kuwaiti North Military Medical Center on September 12, 2019.
Nurses, paramedics, providers, and medics collaborated in real time rapid trauma assessment demonstrating knowledge, cooperation, and professionalism. Primarily medic led, the exercise covered numerous medical skills ranging from administering IVs, airway obstruction management, as well as the documentation of the critical trauma scenario.
Sgt. Celina Castro, one of the leading NCOs (Non-commissioned Officer) from the 349th discusses the goal of the exercise stating, "'The Medic Exchange Workshop' between the US and the Kuwaitis aimed to teach medical personnel how to treat a critical trauma patient, focusing on trauma roles." During an event of a trauma, critical procedures occur in matter of minutes. Sgt. Castro continues about how critical these skills can be during a resuscitation. "A trauma resuscitation happens in as little as 6-8 minutes where information is shared, rapid diagnostics occur, and life saving interventions are performed to stabilize a patient. US Army medics and nurses also set up skills stations covering basic individual skills to include airway management, IV access and lab draws, as well as trauma resuscitation documentation." Sgt. Celina Castro serves as the Non-Commisioned Officer in Charge of the ICU/ICW of the United States Military Hospital - Kuwait.
