    “Kick Chalks!” “Maintenance Rocks!”

The 1st Maintenance Group celebrated the Maintenance Professional of the Year awards banquet at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, March 22, 2019.

“The MPoY gives us, as supervisors, the opportunity to highlight those Airmen that maintain lethality,” said U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Eric Burke, 1st Maintenance Group superintendent. “The caliber of the Airmen we have at Langley is by far some of the best, especially with the Raptor.”

    “Dragons!” “Feed the Beast!”

The 1st Maintenance Squadron, comprised of nine diverse flights, provides both on- and off-aircraft maintenance support for the 1st Fighter Wing's F-22 fleet. These include but are not limited to repair and overhaul capabilities for egress, fuels, armament, structural and low observable systems, and maintenance of the wing's fleet of F119-PW-100 engines.

“If a Raptor is in the Air.” “We put it there!”

The 1st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron is comprised of the 27th and 94th Aircraft Maintenance Units. Utilizing an $82 million equipment inventory, the squadron performs on-aircraft maintenance including inspections, servicing, and launch and recovery actions to maintain the fleet in mission-ready status.

    “Who you with?” “Two-Seven!”

First organized at Kelly Field, Texas May 8, 1917 as the 27th Aero Squadron, the Fightin’ Eagles own the distinction as the oldest active fighter squadron in the United States Air Force. Soon after their creation, the 27th left to serve in the European Theater in WWI and continuing the Fightin’ Eagles’ tradition of firsts, the 27th was the first to transition to the Air Force’s fifth-generation F-22 Raptor, the first to achieve Initial Operational Capability, and the first to take the Raptor to combat in 2014.

    “Who Rules?” “Spads Rule.”

“Best in the Wing.” “Hat in the Ring”

The 94th Fighter Squadron is one of the oldest and most decorated fighter squadrons in America's history. It is tasked to provide Air Superiority for the United States and allied forces by engaging and destroying enemy forces, equipment, defenses or installations. The 94th performed the first patrol flown by an American‑trained squadron in France during World War I. With such famous members as Eddie Rickenbacker, James Meissner, and Douglas Campbell, and under the mentorship of the Lafayette Escadrille’s most lethal pilot, Raoul Lufbery, the "Hat‑in‑the-Ring Gang" scored nearly 70 kills during the war, more than any other squadron, flying the Nieuport 28 and SPAD XIII.

After a medallion ceremony for all the nominees, 42 Airman were highlighted with awards. Some of the award categories will go on to compete at Air Combat Command level or higher, while others will remain in the maintenance community.

To continue the celebration, the 1st FW has attained the second goal day of the year April 1st.

“Collectively I think it goes with empowering the squadrons and coming up with some initiatives to maintain our pilot’s readiness and at the same time our maintenance lethality,” Burke said. “This gives us the opportunity to have a goal and meet it, and with that goal give people time back.”
