EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- The Center for Navy Aviation Technical Training (CNATT) Detachment Eglin Air Force Base began its latest Lance Corporal Ethics and Leadership Seminar Sept. 23.
The five-day course takes students away from their boot camp mindset and develops them into freethinking leaders at the junior level.
“At any given time, schoolhouses across the Navy and Marine Corps experience a population of students awaiting training,” said Marine Corps Sgt. Brandon Masoni, a CNATT Det. Eglin Air Force Base instructor. “Our staff recognized this opportunity and in December 2017, we implemented this program here at Eglin.”
The Lance Corporal Ethics and Leadership Seminar, usually only offered at fleet squadrons, is required Professional Military Education (PME) prior to a Marine’s promotion to lance corporal.
“This seminar allows students awaiting instruction the opportunity to obtain required training six months in advance,” said Masoni. “It also supports the fleet by sending students to their first squadrons with PME complete beyond their paygrade.”
Each student completes an online training pre-requisite prior to attending the seminar that introduces topics that the course reinforces.
“The program is geared towards the Marine Total Fitness Concept where the spiritual, mental, social and physical chords of fitness are developed,” said Masoni. “We teach tradition, values, individual courage, moral challenges and ethical leadership. We also discuss social concerns and set the atmosphere for open dialogue where students are free to talk about their own views on the issues presented.”
In addition to classroom training, students complete a one-time, hour-long workout session with a force fitness instructor to learn about force fitness methodologies.
“We are the only ‘C’ school in any platform offering the Lance Corporal Ethics and Leadership Seminar,” said Marine Corps Master Sgt. Eric Struxness, CNATT Det. Eglin Air Force Base’s deputy training officer. “Sailors and Marines both benefit from the training, leadership and mentorship of this program. It is a great example of how traditional service-specific programs adapt to represent and support a joint aircraft and training program.”
Since 2017, the schoolhouse has conducted 24 classes and graduated 374 Marines.
The command broke ground this year by opening the seminar to Sailors in the F-35 joint strike fighter-training pipeline. Sixteen Sailors joined and graduated from the course.
CNATT Det. Eglin Air Force Base is one of 27 sites located throughout the United States and Japan, which develops, delivers and supports aviation technical training. CNATT is a training center under Naval Education and Training Command, and is a technical training agent for the Naval Aviation Enterprise, an organization designed to advance and sustain naval aviation warfighting capabilities at an affordable cost.
