MOFFETT AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Calif. – California Air National Guardsmen from the 129th Rescue Wing gathered at Levi's Stadium, Santa Clara, for a pre-game flag unfurling ceremony, September 22, 2019.
The 129th RQW airmen and civilian volunteers took the field to unfurl a football field-size American Flag for the playing of the National Anthem on Sunday, as a part of 49ers salute to the Nation’s veterans.
“We feel like it’s a nice gesture to thank our men and women serving our great nation,” said Billy Barnes, manager, Entertainment & Live Event Operations, San Francisco 49ers.
Chief Moore organized the guardsmen volunteers for the ceremony.
“The 49ers as an organization were kind enough to have us here to do the flag unfurling ceremony,” said Chief Master Sgt. Sean M. Moore, loadmaster, HC-130J Combat Kings II aircraft. “We reached out to the Wing and I got volunteers to come out here and spend a really great day contributing to one of the greatest teams in the Bay Area.”
In addition to the ceremony, the volunteers positioned a large stadium tarp on the 20 yard line as a target for four civilian sky divers, flying the American Flag, to land on.
“As soon as they all landed, we would fold the tarp and get it off the field, and grab the flag and run out of the tunnel,” said Moore.
For some volunteers, their first time going to a professional football game is extra special.
“I feel very proud to represent my Wing,” said Master Sgt. Nidia M. Ituarte, Chief Financial Services, 129th Comptroller Flight. “It felt like we were being recognized for things we do for our country.”
