Continuing its longstanding relationship with the Republic of Kenya, three Kenya Defence Forces officers visited WRAIR on 24 September as part of a broader visit to the National Capitol Region, including stops at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and Defense Health Agency Headquarters.
WRAIR’s association with Kenya began in 1969, when scientists were invited by the Kenyan government to help address an outbreak of trypanosomiasis, or African sleeping sickness. Made permanent in 1973, the portfolio of the outfit, now called the U.S. Army Medical Research Directorate-Africa, has expanded to research a broad range of infectious disease threats, including HIV, malaria, enteric disease and multidrug resistance. Recently celebrating its 50 anniversary, USAMRD-A is now the headquarters of WRAIR’s activities across Africa.
The visit was an opportunity to continue and expand the longstanding friendship and partnership between WRAIR and the government of Kenya beyond its infectious disease roots. The visit included tours of many WRAIR laboratories studying infectious diseases and developing products for Soldier health and wellbeing.
