The 100th Civil Engineer Squadron Recycling Center, through their Qualified Recycling Program, are on pace to recycle around 450 tons of waste during fiscal year 2019 through creating awareness on reducing the human carbon footprint on base.
Cost-effective measures produced through the 100th Air Refueling Wing Integrated Solid Waste Management Plan, have allowed for the base to establish solid waste program goals, define responsibilities and outline a modernization program.
These measures include using a 7.5 ton vehicle for waste pick-up, a new cardboard compacter, a new, electric forklift to cut diesel emissions in the recycling center and establishing weekly and daily collection points.
“Our mission is to continue reducing as much solid waste as we can year after year,” said Rory Palmer, 100th CES qualified recycling program manager. “From an operations view, we must divert as much waste from landfills in both an economical and feasible way. The more that can be taken away from going into landfills, then the more money is saved for the base.”
The recycling center is also able to conduct their mission by providing external recycling bins, labels, collecting, transporting and processing materials for purchase and pickup for disposal while also advertising proper disposal methods.
“Our plan talks about source reduction being a basic solution to the garbage surplus,” Palmer stated. “Less waste means less of a waste problem. After source reduction, re-use and recycling are the preferred waste options because they help us reduce the amount going to landfills and conserve resources.”
According to Palmer, the key to reducing waste and meeting ISWMP targets is to educate the base population and promote proper recycling methods.
“The 100th CES operations and environmental departments continually educate and advertise correct disposal methods for waste around base,” Palmer said. “Our recycling center team issues a guide on recycling and waste disposal to all base newcomers, installs billboards and display signs on dumpsters; while Environmental provides expertise to all facilities on base and promotes both America Recycles Day and Earth Day.”
Reducing waste on RAF Mildenhall has always been of the highest priority for environmental, financial and mission-related reasons and is crucial for RAF Mildenhall to help future generations by continuing the movement.
Palmer explained how the base also works alongside the West Suffolk Council’s waste management office to improve recycling off-base as well and ensures the base and local community work together through beautification projects.
“Living on this planet now and knowing that you want to provide a better environment for younger generations is kind of a moral policy,” Palmer remarked. “The more we can reduce landfill use and the more we recycle the better it is for the world and will lead to a brighter future for us all.”
