Effective this October, the Military Health System (MHS) Optical Fabrication Enterprise (OFE) will offer a new selection of eyewear to all Active Duty Service Members as part of DOD’s Frame of Choice program. It is also slowly removing older eyewear styles over time. The previous refresh was completed in 2016.
The Frame of Choice Spectacle Program is a collection of civilian-style frames offered to permanent party active-duty Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard members. This latest refresh is a result of ongoing effort to promote vision readiness, high visual performance and safety for Service Members. The new eyeglass frame styles mirror eyewear that are commonly selected at commercial optical establishments. The new eyewear by their design allow for more rapid fabrication, reducing delay in getting them to the military beneficiary.
The OFE, made up of Tri-Service and Defense Health Agency representatives, is committed to providing service members quality eyewear that meet military requirements and look like commercially available products. In addition to the Frame of Choice eyewear, the OFE also fabricates Combat eyewear, flight eyewear, standard issue eyewear and ophthalmic technology that meets special military requirements.
