Afghan, coalition forces kill militants in Wardak

KABUL, Afghanistan — Afghan and coalition forces conducted a deliberate assault in Wardak province early this morning, June 2, killing six militants responsible for attacks in the province.

In Nirkh District, approximately 40 kilometers southwest of Kabul, a combined force patrolled to a compound in Qal Eh Ye Pactshah village, where militants had been tracked following an attack against security forces. The militants are connected to a Taliban sub-commander operating in Jalrez District, Wardak province, involved in multiple attacks against Afghan and coalition forces using heavy weaponry, mines and suicide bombers.

At the compound housing the known militants, Afghan forces who were calling for all non-combatants to exit their homes, were engaged by two enemy combatants from rooftops. Forces returned fire, killing both combatants.

All women and children were protected as Afghan and coalition forces conducted a search of the buildings, encountering armed militants inside. Four combatants were killed in the engagement.

Forces found multiple AK-47 assault rifles, chest racks, IED-making materials and grenades on the compound. Forces destroyed the grenades a safe distance off the compound and removed other weapons and associated materials.

A local citizen identified one of the dead combatants to be Shah Agha, a known Taliban sub-commander whom coalition forces had been targeting. He was responsible for facilitating attacks against security forces, and for kidnapping government officials and contractors working in support of the Afghan government.
