A presentation and luncheon to celebrate Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month were held at the 22 Area Regimental Aid Station May 21.
In 1978 Congress passed a Joint-Congressional Resolution to commemorate Asian American Heritage Week during the first week of May. This date was chosen in the remembrance of the first Japanese immigrants arriving in America May 7, 1843, and the completion of the Chinese-built transcontinental railroad May 10, 1869.
In 1990 Congress voted to expand it to a month-long celebration and in May 1992, the month was permanently known as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.
"We held this luncheon to show what part the Asian Pacific Islanders have in the United States," said Navy Seaman Travis H. Morris, Corpsman with Supply Battalion, Combat Logistics Regiment 15, 1st Marine Logistics Group. "Another reason we held it was because most of the people who work here are Asian descents," said Morris, 23, Jamestown, N.D.
During the presentation, they mentioned Asian Pacific Islander Medal of Honor recipients and famous people in politics, sports and media. The program meal was a traditional roast pig, lumpia, pancit, barbecue-short ribs and fruit.
"This is a great way to celebrate all the Marines and sailors of Asian descent," said Col. Joseph P. Granata, commanding officer for CLR-15, 1st MLG. "We appreciate all the work they're doing here," said Granata, 46, Fredonia, N.Y.
Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is celebrated throughout the United States.
"Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is a big deal," said Chief Petty Officer Ben Cabarloc, 39, Celina, Ohio, leading chief petty officer of 22 Area Regimental Aid Station.
