Virginia Beach, Va. – Yeoman 2nd Class Hannah Rick, a native from Niagara Falls, New York, currently serves as the leading petty officer for the special security office at Information Warfare Training Command (IWTC) Virginia Beach.

Rick enlisted in the United States Navy in September 2013, and attended boot camp in Great Lakes, Illinois. Following boot camp, she attended Yeoman “A” school in Meridian, Mississippi.

Upon graduation, she reported to Information Dominance Corps Region Mid-Atlantic Northeast Det., Fort Dix, New Jersey. While there, she was recognized as the command’s 2015 Blue Jacket of the Year.

Rick also served aboard USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) as the commanding officer’s administration leading petty officer. While aboard, she completed two deployments in support of Operation Inherent Resolve and the Secretary of Defense Dynamic Force Employment tasking.

In April 2019, Rick reported to IWTC Virginia Beach, where she is a special security representative, responsible for providing support to over 280 military and civilian staff and 6,500 students. She ensures all students, staff, and command visitors have the proper security clearance to enter classified spaces and are eligible to access curriculum ranging from unclassified to top secret. While enforcing the Navy’s information warfare community standards, Rick protects our critical information from foreign and domestic adversaries.

“Joining the Navy was the best decision I could have made,” said Rick. “It provided me with a diverse amount of opportunities and a solid foundation for the future. Since joining the IWTC Virginia Beach team, I am working outside of the normal administrative duties of the yeoman rating, allowing me to gain a clear understanding of the importance of security and clearance eligibility. It’s been extremely rewarding thus far to be a part of a motivated team that is efficiently training the Navy’s current and next generation of information warfare Sailors.”

IWTC Virginia Beach, located in Dam Neck Annex, currently offers 65 courses of instruction in information technology, cryptology, and intelligence with an instructor and support staff of 280 military, civilian, and contractors who train over 6,500 students every year. It is one of four schoolhouses for the Center for Information Warfare Training (CIWT) and oversees learning sites at Jacksonville and Mayport, Florida; Kings Bay, Georgia; and Groton, Connecticut to continue aligning IW community training.

With four schoolhouse commands, two detachments, and training sites throughout the United States and Japan, CIWT is recognized as Naval Education and Training Command’s top learning center for the past three years. Training over 21,000 students every year, CIWT delivers trained information warfare professionals to the Navy and joint services. CIWT also offers more than 200 courses for cryptologic technicians, intelligence specialists, information systems technicians, electronics technicians, and officers in the information warfare community.
