Chièvres, Belgium -- October is Energy Action Month. This year's theme, "Energy Resilience Enables Army Readiness," reinforces the Army's top priorities of readiness, modernization, reform, and lethality. The Army's ability to accomplish its mission of protecting U.S. national security interests at home and abroad depends on resilient, uninterrupted access to energy.

“During Energy Action Month and throughout the year, think about how energy resilience enables Army readiness. Be proactive in reducing consumption and making those around you aware of the vital role installation and operational energy has in mission success,” said Alex A. Beehler, Assistant Secretary of the Army for Installations, Energy and Environment.

In fiscal year 2018, Army installations spent more than $1.1 billion on energy. U.S. Army Garrison Benelux spent $4 million in the same timeframe.
“Improving the resilience of our energy supply chain and wisely using energy every day throughout the year ensures that we remain Army Strong,” Beehler said.

We need energy and water to accomplish our missions, work and live but we need to use them wisely. We need to work as a team to increase the garrison’s energy resilience, improve our energy efficiency and reduce our overall consumptions and costs.

Individuals can do a lot to help, both at work and at home. You can stop using something you do not need, turn lights off when you leave a room, turn TVs and monitors off when you are not using them. You should also consider turning off or unplugging any appliances you are not using as most will keep using electricity in standby mode. Most of the Energy Star and European Label A and above appliances will use less power in standby mode, but if you are not using them and have easy access to them, just unplug them.

Reducing our energy and water consumption will decrease the Army’s utility bills but will also reduce the backup infrastructure needs and the implementation costs related to those.
