CAMP CARROLL, Republic of Korea – Leadership from the 498th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion (CSSB) assumed responsibility over the Camp Carroll Dining Facility with a ribbon-cutting and re-naming ceremony, Oct. 8.
The post DFAC is now known as the Hill Top 303 Grill in honor of the Soldiers who died in the Battle of Taegu during the early days of the Korea War on August 17, 1950.
“Today we don’t just cut a ribbon on a building,” said U.S. Army Col. Christopher Noe, the brigade commander of U.S. Army Materiel Support Command-Korea “We pay honor to those more than 40 warriors who died on Hill 303.”
U.S Army Capt. Hyoseok Kim, a chaplain with the 498th CSSB, opened the ceremony with a prayer recognizing those who fought on the hill.
“Sixty-nine years ago, U.S. Soldiers and Republic of Korea soldiers, fought side by side to defend Hill 303,” he said. “They were our brothers who shed their blood to protect the freedom of this country. We remember this ultimate sacrifice; because of them, we can live and enjoy freedom in this country.”
U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Mark Simerly, commanding general of the 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command (ESC), also spoke during the ceremony about the significance of recognizing the battle this month.
“It’s very appropriate that this is the time that we rename it, in addition to the fact that in October is when we traditionally recognize the battles that have taken place around the Busan perimeter, Daegu, the Nakdong River, and Hill 303,” he said.
Changes made to the facility on Camp Carroll serve to improve quality of life and make those who dine in it feel more at home during their time in Korea.
“At 19th ESC we say that every Soldier counts,” Simerly said. “We also know that means every civilian counts, and every Soldier’s family counts, and I think that when we’re standing here in the Hill Top 303 Grill, we can say that every meal counts.”
