The 48th Equipment Maintenance Squadron Repair and Reclamation flight participated in K12 Fire Rescue Saw training with the 48th Civil Engineer Squadron fire department Oct. 7 here.

The training marks the first time the 48th Repair and Reclamation flight received hands-on K12 saw training with 48th CES. The participants had the opportunity to sharpen their current skills while learning new ones they could use in emergency situations.

“If an aircraft crashes we have to reclaim every part in the area and cut up the aircraft,” said Staff Sgt. Julian Evans, 48th EMS aircraft recovery craftsman. “Luckily we don’t have crashes often, so we don’t get the opportunity to have hands-on experience but working with the 48th CES allows us to increase our capabilities.”

Firefighters from the 48th CES taught proper approach techniques, identification of correct places to cut into a vehicle and how to safely operate and use the K12 saw.

During the training, the participants donned their safety equipment to include steel-toed rubber boots, Tyvek protective suits, gloves and gas masks. The 48th CES provided an abandoned vehicle for the participants to practice with and step-by-step instructions on how to safely use the K12 Saw.

By conducting this training, aircraft recovery personnel are equipped with the skills needed to respond to any potential crisis with a jet.

“Today’s training helped me learn a lot useful skills today,” said Airman Gabriel Santoyo, 48th EMS repair and reclamation apprentice, “If an aircraft were to ever crash it wouldn’t be very safe for me to help respond because now I have the tools to execute our mission during such an emergency situation.”

The Repair and Reclamation flight hopes to partner with the 48th CES for additional training opportunities in the near future.

Training for Liberty Wing Airmen is a continuous process, ensuring they are current and refining the skills necessary to execute the mission.
