FORT INDIANTOWN GAP, Pa. – The National Guard Bureau awarded the Pennsylvania National Guard its "Excellence in Diversity Award" for outstanding work in diversity and inclusion Sept. 24 at the Lavern E. Weber Professional Education Center (PEC), Camp Robinson, Ark.
Under the leadership of the Joint Diversity Executive Council, the Pa. National Guard rated first among the 54 state and territorial National Guards in our efforts and activities to highlight the importance of a diverse workforce.
Some of the events recognized included; the annual Unity Day celebration, Women's Leadership Luncheon, and the Octavius V. Catto Award.
“We are proud to be recognized for this important achievement,” said Dr. Millicent Carvalho-Grevious, state equal employment manager.
Lt. Gen. Joseph Lengyel, Chief of the National Guard Bureau, presented the award to Maj. Gen. Anthony Carrelli, Pennsylvania’s adjutant general, Command Sgt. Maj. Harry Buchanan, Dr. Carvalho-Grevious, and Brig. Gen. David Wood, director of the Joint Staff, during the annual Joint Diversity Workshop held at PEC.
Lengyel proudly noted the Pa. Guard is the only state to have a service medal specifically awarded for diversity and inclusion, the Octavius V. Catto Medal. While accepting the award, Carrelli noted the tradition of diversity in the Commonwealth dating back to the original founding charter and William Penn.
